Showboats Give Back at FedExFamilyHouse

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (April 27, 2024) – The Memphis Showboats spent some time giving back at FedExFamilyHouse Saturday afternoon before their Sunday showdown with the Michigan Panthers. 

Representatives of the Showboats visited the facility, which is a home-away-from-home for out-of-town families with children receiving treatment at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.

Defensive back Jarey Elder, linebacker Jordan Ferguson, linebacker Jeff McCulloch, wide receiver Vinny Papale, offensive lineman Darrin Paulo, running back Darius Victor and quarterback Troy Williams delivered food items for the families staying at FedExFamilyHouse and even took time to bake some fresh cookies for those staying there.

“One of the great things about playing in the UFL is the league’s commitment to community service,” Elder said. “I try to take part in as many of these activities as I can. I’m so fortunate to be able to play this game that I love and that it gives me a platform to spread some joy and help out where I can.”

In addition to stocking pantries with staples for families staying at the house to be able to make a meal and baking cookies, the Showboats representatives got to learn about the mission of FedExFamily House. FedExFamilyHouse opened its doors in December 2010 to provide free, comfortable accommodations. Families staying at the house have access to sleeping rooms, play rooms, computer workstations for parents and students, outdoor relaxation and recreation areas and much more.

Financial support for construction of FedExFamilyHouse came from a $2.3 million donation from FedEx Corp. and personal donations from Fred Smith, Chairman and CEO, and his wife, Diane, and Alan Graf, executive vice president and CFO, and his wife, Susan.

“I was blown away,” Williams said. “I had no idea a place like that existed and I learned so much about it. The generosity of the people responsible for getting it started and the people who continue to support through donations and volunteering is amazing. It meant a lot to me and my teammates and I hope we were able to make even a little difference in the lives of some families there.”

The community involvement for the Showboats continues next week. The team will host a youth football skills clinic Friday at the Liberty Park campus adjacent to Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.
