Houston Aims to Spoil Champs’ Homecoming

by Ethan Berch

ARLINGTON, TX – April 8, 2026 – The DC Defenders return to Audi Field for the first time since their 2025 UFL Championship victory. Houston enters off a thrilling upset and will look to spoil DC’s 2026 home debut.

Storylines to watch:

Houston Gamblers

After their Week One performance, nobody truly gave Kevin Sumlin’s Gamblers a shot in their Week Two matchup with Birmingham. Sumlin had his team prepared, and they flipped the script on their season outlook with an impressive showing.

Houston jumped from 284 total yards in Week One to 407 in the win, while dominating time of possession, 38 minutes to 22. A big reason for that was their improvement on third down. They converted 7-of-15, far from elite, but a major step forward in sustaining drives.

The Gamblers consistently moved into plus territory but struggled to finish in the red zone, going just 1-of-6. Fortunately for Houston, kicker John Hoyland delivered in a big way, going a perfect 5-for-5 on field goals, including a walk-off 50-yarder.

Sumlin’s group managed the game effectively, chipping away throughout the afternoon and ultimately out-executing Birmingham when it mattered most.

Defensively, Houston was just as efficient. They held Birmingham under 300 total yards and excelled in key situations, limiting the Stallions to just 1-of-5 on third down while tightening up on fourth down.

Turnovers proved to be the difference. Houston picked off Matt Corral twice in critical moments, with Carlton Johnson and Kary Vincent Jr. each coming away with interceptions. If they can create similar takeaways against DC, much like St. Louis did in Week One, the Gamblers will have a real shot at a second straight upset.

The biggest storyline for Houston remains at quarterback. Hunter Dekkers exited with an injury, forcing Nolan Henderson into action. Henderson stepped in and played like a seasoned pro, delivering his defining moment on the final drive. Facing fourth-and-16, he found Armani Rogers downfield to keep the game alive and set up the win.

After a rocky Week One, Henderson’s consistency is now the question. Which version will show up this week?

DC Defenders

The Defenders return to Audi Field for their home debut, marking their first game there since last season’s championship victory. The energy in the nation’s capital should be electric as they welcome the team back.

DC responded in a big way in Week Two, shifting the narrative from offensive inconsistency to a clear identity built around the run. They piled up 229 rushing yards and found the end zone four times on the ground.

Deon Jackson led the charge with a career-high three touchdowns, already matching his total from a season ago.

With the ground game rolling, quarterback Jordan Ta’amu was asked to do very little, attempting just 11 passes.

Defensively, DC continued to impress. After a strong Week One, they followed it up by forcing four turnovers and recording four sacks in Week Two. They consistently pressured Jalan McClendon, forcing multiple mistakes.

The defense created a clear edge and swung momentum throughout the game. Defensive Player of the Week Sam Kidd was the catalyst, leading the team with seven total tackles (six solo) and adding his first interception of the season. Up front, Brandon Smith made his presence felt with five solo tackles, including two for loss.

It appears the Defenders have steadied themselves after their Week One stumble, but they’ll be tested by a Houston team riding the momentum of a statement win.

X-Factor:

The Defenders may have reestablished their identity with a dominant Week Two performance, but one game isn’t definitive. Week Three, and their home opener, presents a chance to prove it. For Houston, questions still remain.

But Saturday night offers a major opportunity to answer them against the defending champs on their home field.
