Running It Back: Columbus Hosts Houston in Week Six Rematch

by Ethan Berch

ARLINGTON, TX – April 29, 2026 – Following a tight battle between the Gamblers and the Aviators in Week Five, the teams are slated for round two in Columbus in Week Six. Houston bested Columbus last weekend, riding a second half shutout to a key victory.

Storylines to watch:

Houston Gamblers

The Gamblers collected a much-needed win, out-dueling the Aviators last week to stay one game out of a postseason spot. With the season now halfway complete, Houston remains within striking distance and needs another big result this weekend.

The identity of Houston’s offense all season has been its rushing attack, and they are expected to lean on it once again this week.

Houston owns one of the league’s better rushing attacks, ranking third in the UFL in total rushing yards at 123 per game. Marcus Yarns and Jalen White have been the catalysts out of the backfield, both ranking inside the top ten in rushing yards per game. They helped power a 120-yard team effort in Week Five.

On the other side, Columbus owns the league’s worst rushing defense, surrendering 133 yards per game. If Houston wants to sneak away with a two-game sweep over Columbus, running the football efficiently will once again be the key to controlling tempo.

In fact, Houston’s only two touchdown drives last week came on its first two possessions, with the rushing attack leading the way and opening opportunities through the air.

Quarterback Nolan Henderson has been defined by grit, according to head coach Kevin Sumlin. Henderson needs to continue giving his playmakers chances in the passing game when those windows open up.

Defensively, Malik Fisher must wreck the pocket. Fisher ranks second in the league in sacks with 4.5 and third in tackles for loss with six. He leads a Houston unit that has brought down opposing quarterbacks 12 times, tied for second in the UFL.

One of the biggest reasons Houston held Jalan McClendon and Columbus scoreless in the second half last week was its pressure. The Gamblers sacked McClendon three times and kept him uncomfortable throughout. If he gets time, he can spread the ball around and become a real problem.

Houston also forced two turnovers, including one late in the fourth quarter. Game-changing plays helped swing the matchup last week, and creating disruption again is just as critical.

Lastly, Houston has to finish drives. The Gamblers rank fourth in total offense but last in scoring. They move the football, but stall out too often. Field goals and empty red zone trips are a tough formula to live on.

Houston needs to turn yards into points.

Columbus Aviators

After a statement win over Dallas in Week Three, the Aviators dropped Week Four and now need a victory this week to keep their postseason hopes alive.

First and foremost for Columbus is winning the time of possession battle. They rank at the top of the league in both time of possession and first downs earned this season. Their formula is simple: long drives, balanced offense, and wearing teams down. If they control the clock, Houston’s explosive backs stay on the sideline with fewer chances to flip the game.

Despite the team’s ups and downs, Jalan McClendon has played efficient football this season. He ranks top three in passing yards, completion percentage, and total offense. Yet Columbus has only one win to show for it.

McClendon needs to do more, and it starts with protecting the football. Keeping his offense on the field is beyond critical for a team desperate for a win. Houston will pressure him again, so quick decisions and accuracy are vital.

Additionally, getting star receiver Keke Chism involved is pivotal. Chism has totaled just 118 yards through five games and has rarely been a major factor for the Aviators. Unlocking his dynamic skill set would be a huge boost for Columbus.

Columbus’ rush defense already got a taste of what Houston can do on the ground last week, and now has to deal with it again in Week Six.

As it stands, the Aviators rank last in the league against the run, allowing 133 yards per game. Not only does Houston have explosive backs, but Nolan Henderson can create with his legs as well.

If Columbus cannot slow Houston on early downs, they risk losing control of the game all over again.

X-Factor:

Houston’s rushing attack against Columbus’ front seven. If Marcus Yarns and Jalen White get going early, the Gamblers can control tempo and keep Jalan McClendon watching from the sideline.
