Stallions Surging, Aviators Sliding as Birmingham Hosts Columbus in Week Eight Finale
by Ethan Berch
ARLINGTON, TX – May 14, 2026 – Following back-to-back victories, the Birmingham Stallions return home to Protective Stadium to host the Columbus Aviators in a pivotal Week Eight showdown. Birmingham enters red hot and charging toward the postseason, while Columbus is fighting to keep its playoff hopes alive.
With only three games remaining, the margin for error has disappeared. This is must-win football for both sides.
This marks the first of back-to-back meetings between the Aviators and Stallions, as the two teams will meet again next week in Columbus for a pivotal Week Nine rematch.
Storylines to watch:
Columbus Aviators
The Aviators are coming off a road loss to the St. Louis Battlehawks, where they were slowed by the UFL’s top defense. Now sitting on the outside looking in of the playoff picture, Columbus desperately needs a response.
Their biggest opportunity comes on the ground. Columbus owns the top rushing attack in the UFL, averaging 138 rushing yards per game, and now faces a Birmingham defense that ranks near the bottom of the league against the run, allowing 106 rushing yards per contest.
Everything starts with the run game for Columbus. The Aviators lead the league in time of possession and want to control the pace, grind out long drives, and keep Dorian Thompson-Robinson off the field.
John Lovett, ZaQuandre White, Toa Taua, and Jalan McClendon all rank among the league’s top rushers, giving Columbus one of the deepest rushing rotations in the UFL. Each back brings a different style, making the Aviators difficult to defend when they establish rhythm on the ground. If Columbus controls the trenches and shortens the game, they’ll give themselves a real shot to keep their season alive.
Despite the 2-5 record, the Aviators still boast the top pass defense in the UFL, surrendering just 143 passing yards per game. A major reason why has been their ability to keep opposing offenses off the field, but their secondary has also consistently made life difficult on quarterbacks.
DJ Miller Jr. has emerged as one of the league’s top corners with seven passes defended this season, while the pass rush led by Ron Stone Jr. and Kenny Willekes continues to generate pressure and force hurried decisions.
The plan defensively is simple: contain DTR, limit his ability to create outside the pocket, and make him uncomfortable all night long. If Columbus can force Birmingham into obvious passing situations, they’ll have a chance to steal a massive road win.
Ball security will also be critical. Jalan McClendon must capitalize on opportunities through the air while avoiding turnovers that could quickly flip momentum in Birmingham’s favor.
Birmingham Stallions
The Stallions enter Week Eight fresh off a thrilling overtime victory and their second straight win. After opening the season 1-4, Birmingham suddenly finds itself tied for the final playoff spot and playing its best football at the right time.
A win here would be massive for Birmingham’s postseason push.
The Stallions are now 2-1 in the DTR era, and he has completely energized the offense. DTR led Birmingham to an inspiring comeback win over Dallas last week, engineering the game-tying drive late in regulation before delivering two successful overtime conversions to secure the victory.
DTR continues to be dangerous both through the air and on the ground. His ability to extend plays and create outside structure has added a new dimension to Birmingham’s offense, while his arm strength has consistently generated explosive plays. Through three games, he has thrown for 743 yards and five touchdowns. Another big performance would further strengthen Birmingham’s playoff position.
Veteran receiver Jaydon Mickens is also coming off another standout performance and now leads the UFL in both receptions and receiving yards. Mickens hauled in six catches for 82 yards and a touchdown last week, including the walk-off conversion in overtime.
He now sits at 38 receptions for 486 yards on the season and continues to be the most reliable target in Birmingham’s offense. In a talented receiver room, Mickens has consistently delivered in key moments.
Even after the win last week, Birmingham still needs more offensive consistency. The Stallions converted just 2-of-10 third downs against Dallas and totaled only 230 yards of offense. Against a talented Columbus defense, sustained drives and situational execution will be vital.
Defensively, Birmingham’s focus is straightforward: stop the run. Columbus wants to dominate possession and wear defenses down physically. The Stallions must force the Aviators into long-yardage situations and make McClendon beat them through the air.
That challenge becomes even more important considering Columbus owns the league’s worst rush defense. If Anthony McFarland and Snoop Conner can establish an effective rushing attack early, it could open the field for DTR and create explosive opportunities in the passing game.
X-Factor:
If the Stallions can contain Columbus’ rushing attack and allow Dorian Thompson-Robinson the opportunity to operate the offense comfortably, Birmingham will be in a strong position to win and keep its playoff hopes alive.
Meanwhile, if the Aviators can control the game on the ground and dominate time of possession, they will give themselves an excellent chance to pull off a massive road victory.
