An Easter Day Showdown: Houston Seeks First Victory in Home Debut Against Birmingham

by Ethan Berch

ARLINGTON, TX – April 2, 2026 – We have an Easter Day showdown in Houston. The Gamblers are set to host the Stallions in the first-ever UFL contest at Shell Energy Stadium. Houston is in search of its first win of the season, while Birmingham looks to improve to 2-0.

Storylines to Watch:

Birmingham Stallions

The Stallions began the “AJ McCarron Era” with a gutsy road victory in Louisville. Despite a sellout crowd at Lynn Family Field, quarterback Matt Corral remained poised down the stretch, leading a game-winning drive to secure Birmingham’s first win of the season.

While the final score read just 15-13, Birmingham controlled the game from start to finish. They dominated possession, holding the ball for an astonishing 38:12 and running 65 plays compared to Louisville’s 44. Credit a strong defensive performance, but more importantly, the Stallions dictated the tempo all night.

A major reason why was their third-down dominance. Birmingham was the most efficient team in Week One in those situations, going an eye-popping 10-of-16. Time and time again, when they needed a play, Corral delivered, often finding veteran receiver Jaydon Mickens, who finished with nine receptions for 102 yards. That consistency wore down the Louisville defense as the game progressed.

The offense also showcased a balanced attack, rushing for 112 yards. Snoop Conner led the way with 56 yards and a touchdown, helping Birmingham stay ahead of the chains throughout the night. If that trend continues, the Stallions will once again put themselves in position to control the game.

Corral’s stat line, 207 passing yards and a late touchdown, may not jump off the page, but his impact was undeniable. His 13-play, 66-yard game-winning drive that drained over six minutes told the story. When Birmingham needed him most, he delivered.

The Stallions also won the turnover battle convincingly, finishing +3. They protected the football while their defense forced key takeaways, an equation that wins games more often than not.

Defensively, Birmingham was especially strong against the run, allowing just 46 yards and completely disrupting Louisville’s offensive game plan. If that unit performs at a similar level, Houston could be in for a long day.

Houston Gamblers

Houston’s opener against Dallas was defined by missed opportunities and early mistakes, as an early turnover set the tone in a game they were never able to fully recover from.

There were, however, encouraging signs, particularly at quarterback. Hunter Dekkers took over for much of the second half and provided a spark, throwing for 227 yards and helping Houston move the ball effectively between the 20s. He also accounted for the team’s only offensive touchdown on the ground.

Dekkers built strong chemistry with his top targets, Jalen Moreno-Cropper and Jontre Kirklin. Kirklin totaled 60 yards on four receptions, while Moreno-Cropper added five catches for 59 yards. Moreno-Cropper also delivered one of the biggest plays of the week, a 93-yard kick return touchdown that showcased Houston’s explosive potential.

If Dekkers gets the majority of the snaps again in Week Two, Houston may be more competitive than expected. In fact, with him under center, the Gamblers outscored Dallas 14-13 in the second half.

Still, consistency remains the biggest concern. Houston struggled to sustain drives, converting just 2-of-9 third downs while being heavily out-possessed (37:04 to 22:56). That simply cannot continue against a team like Birmingham.

Defensively, the front seven showed flashes, recording seven tackles for loss and two sacks. Malik Fisher and Charlie Thomas III were key contributors, and that group will need to elevate its performance even further this week.

However, the secondary had issues, allowing 376 passing yards and 21 first downs. Despite the pressure up front, the defense failed to generate a turnover, allowing Dallas to maintain control throughout.

The rushing attack also failed to get going, finishing with just 42 total yardsm, 27 of which came from Dekkers. That becomes an even bigger concern this week against the league’s top run defense through Week One.

Overall, head coach Kevin Sumlin will need to find consistency on both sides of the ball if Houston is going to secure its first win of the season.

X-Factor:

Who controls the game? Can Houston extend drives and stay on the field, or will Birmingham once again dictate the tempo?

If the Gamblers can improve on third down and establish even a modest run game, they have the pieces to keep this game competitive.
