Battle of the Heavyweights: Dallas Hosts St. Louis Tuesday Night

by Ethan Berch

ARLINGTON, TX – April 2, 2026 – The two best teams from Week One are set to square off on Tuesday night in Dallas. Austin Reed led Dallas to a record-breaking win, while St. Louis was defined by a dominant defensive performance. The Battlehawks and Renegades now gear up for what looks to be the game of the week.

Storylines to Watch:

St. Louis Battlehawks

St. Louis handed the defending champions a Week One loss behind 30,000-plus fans inside the Battledome. The Battlehawk defense was beyond dominant as they pitched a shutout over the final three quarters of the game.

The Battlehawk pass rush completely took over the game, putting the entire league on notice. They tallied a ridiculous seven sacks, with three players recording 1.5.

Reigning Defensive Player of the Year Pita Taumoepenu led the charge as the defense lived in the backfield. They pressured Jordan Ta’amu all game long and forced him into numerous mistakes, including two interceptions. Tuesday’s battle will most likely require that same level of pressure against the best quarterback from Week One.

Although their offense wasn’t perfect, they did not give the ball away and won the turnover battle by two. Quarterback Brandon Silvers did struggle to consistently move the ball, but when it came to protecting it, he didn’t fail the Battlehawks. That formula of taking care of the football was the difference.

In a game defined by defense, St. Louis still controlled the flow. They ran a total of 59 plays compared to DC’s 46 and controlled the football for 34:19.

The offense wasn’t great, but timely explosive plays helped them move the ball and ultimately win the game. Gary Jennings Jr. had the longest play of the game, turning a short gain into a 64-yard play after breaking tackles and turning upfield.

In the third quarter, Kevon Latulas turned a checkdown into a 43-yard catch and run, which ultimately set up the go-ahead touchdown to Tyler Neville. Silvers did just enough to win St. Louis the game, but he will need to step up in order to deliver win number two.

The Battlehawks did struggle on third downs, going just 5-16, and were a weak 1-4 in the red zone. They left plenty of points on the board, especially in moments where it felt like they could have put the game away.

However, head coach Ricky Proehl managed the second half beautifully and earned his first victory as the leading man in St. Louis.

Dallas Renegades

Dallas absolutely dominated Houston in their season opener. Austin Reed broke the UFL single-game regular season passing record with an astonishing 376 yards, leading Dallas to a 36-17 victory.

Reed was the quarterback of the week, and quite frankly it wasn’t close. His day started fast when he connected with Tyler Vaughns for 58 yards on his very first throw, and he continued to hit on massive chunk plays all afternoon. He tossed three touchdowns and finished with an impressive 120 passer rating.

Vaughns totaled 144 yards on seven receptions, while Greg Ward added three catches for 93 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown.

The Renegades had total offensive control of the game. They finished with a league-best 427 total yards compared to Houston’s 284 and ran 68 plays. They won both the efficiency and volume battle, a rare combination for Rick Neuheisel’s offense. If that trend continues, Dallas will be in a strong position Tuesday night.

Additionally, Dallas didn’t turn the ball over. It was a near flawless performance, and their defense created two takeaways. Steven Jones Jr. set the tone early, jumping an out route and taking it back for a pick-six.

From a defensive standpoint, they were very strong. They held Houston to just 14 first downs and 2-9 on third downs. The formula of scoring quickly, getting stops, and repeating became routine for the Renegades.

Their defense, which was already highly regarded, showed out in Week One and looks like a legitimate threat moving forward.

If there is anything to point out, it is that Houston created some disruption, recording seven tackles for loss and two sacks. Against a St. Louis defense that thrives on negative plays, those issues will need to be cleaned up.

Overall, it was a thoroughly dominant performance from Rick Neuheisel in his debut with the Renegades.
