St. Louis Eyes Postseason Berth in Week 8 Showdown with Houston

by Ethan Berch

ARLINGTON, TX – May 13, 2026 – The Dome at America’s Center, also commonly known as the Battledome, is the setting for a Week Eight duel between the Houston Gamblers and St. Louis Battlehawks. While Houston’s season is on life support, St. Louis enters the weekend with a chance to celebrate a playoff berth on its home turf.

This marks the first of back-to-back meetings between the Gamblers and the Battlehawks, as the two teams will meet again next week in Houston for a rematch.

Storylines to watch:

Houston Gamblers

Following a heartbreaking Week Seven loss to the Orlando Storm, the Gamblers dropped to 2-5. They now sit in must-win territory, likely needing to run the table while also getting help elsewhere in the standings.

What made last week’s defeat sting even more was how dominant Houston looked between the 20s. The Gamblers out-gained Orlando 415-185, but red-zone struggles proved costly as they finished just 1-for-5 inside the 20. It’s rare to control a game that thoroughly and still come away empty-handed.

Hunter Dekkers handled most of the snaps and moved the offense effectively, throwing for 268 yards. But a costly first-half pick-six overshadowed what was otherwise a productive outing. If he gets the nod again, ball security becomes the biggest priority.

Houston also debuted former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback John Rhys Plumlee, who flashed immediate upside in limited action. Plumlee used his legs to extend drives before firing a 49-yard touchdown to Jalen White. If head coach Kevin Sumlin leans into Plumlee’s dual-threat ability, it could present a different challenge for St. Louis.

That challenge overall won’t be easy. The Battlehawks own the top run defense in the UFL, meaning Houston may need to win through the air. Still, backs Marcus Yarns and Jalen White remain critical to maintaining offensive balance.

A hidden weapon for Houston is Lawrence Keys III. Keys ranks among the league leaders in all-purpose yards and leads the UFL in return production. Combined with Jalen Cropper, Houston has explosive special teams options that can tilt field position quickly.

Defensively, Houston has been disruptive all season, leading the league in tackles for loss. Malik Fisher has paced the front with 5.5 sacks and seven tackles for loss, while Kenny Dyson and Anthony Hines help anchor one of the league’s better units.

For Houston, the keys this week are forcing mistakes, winning the field-position battle, and capitalizing when opportunities present themselves.

St. Louis Battlehawks

There’s no question the Battlehawks are one of the hottest teams in the UFL entering Week Eight. Winners of three straight, St. Louis has surged into a tie for first place and now controls a prime playoff opportunity.

With a win at home this weekend, the Battlehawks would clinch a spot in the 2026 playoffs. They are also 3-0 at home and have two of their final three games set to be played inside the Battledome.

Defense has been the identity. St. Louis owns the league’s top run defense, allowing just 79 rushing yards per game, while also ranking second against the pass at only 167 yards allowed per contest. Few teams have matched their balance or consistency.

Up front, Carlos Davis, Pita Taumoepenu, and Travis Feeney have been relentless. In the secondary, Jordan Mosley and Nevelle Clark have helped create takeaways.

Offensively, Luis Perez made his season debut last week and helped spark a 24-point first half. The second half was more uneven, however, as St. Louis managed only seven additional points. Perez also threw an interception on the opening drive of the third quarter and finished at 53 percent passing.

Still, more reps should bring more rhythm. Perez is experienced enough to settle in quickly, and St. Louis hopes that happens this week.

Hakeem Butler led the team with 77 yards on three catches last week while drawing eight targets. He remains one of the most dangerous deep threats in the league and gives Perez a matchup nightmare every snap.

The Battlehawks are chasing their fourth straight win, and a playoff celebration in front of their home crowd would only add to the momentum.

X-Factor:

Houston needs to turn this into an ugly game. The Gamblers must be disruptive on defense, create chaos, and find explosive plays offensively to have a real shot.

However, if St. Louis’ defense stays stout and controls the tempo, the Battlehawks will be in prime position to clinch a postseason berth.
