Redemption and Survival Collide in Louisville
by Ethan Berch
ARLINGTON, TX – May 20, 2026 – No game carries bigger stakes in Week Nine than the clash between the Renegades and Kings. Both teams are fighting for their postseason lives, and an electric atmosphere at Lynn Family Stadium awaits in the final home game of the season for Louisville.
This matchup also serves as a rematch of the shocking Week Five meeting, when the Kings erupted for the third-most points in UFL history in a statement road win over Dallas.
Storylines to watch:
Dallas Renegades
The last month has been nothing short of a nightmare for the Dallas Renegades. A team that once looked primed for the postseason has now dropped five straight and is barely hanging onto playoff hopes.
Their last victory came back on April 12 against the Columbus Aviators, and Dallas is desperate to finally stop the bleeding in Week Nine.
Despite the brutal skid, the Renegades still have life. The path to the postseason is steep and requires help elsewhere around the league, but the door remains open.
The biggest issue during this losing streak has been protection for quarterback Austin Reed. Reed still ranks second in the UFL with 1,660 passing yards and leads the league with 16 touchdown passes, but over the last five games he has constantly faced pressure and has thrown eight interceptions as a result.
Dallas has to keep Reed clean and give him time to operate against a Louisville defense that has allowed the most passing touchdowns in the UFL with 13. It presents a prime opportunity for a bounce-back performance.
It also feels like Tyler Vaughns is due for a breakout. After a scorching start with four touchdowns through his first three games, Vaughns has cooled off in recent weeks. Still, he ranks first in receiving touchdowns with five and third in receiving yards with 457.
If Reed gets rolling, Vaughns likely will too. Dallas desperately needs its stars to show up in the biggest game of the season.
Week Nine also gives Reed a shot at redemption after Week Five, when he threw four interceptions, including two pick-sixes. Revenge will absolutely be on his mind heading into Louisville.
Defensively, the focus for Dallas has to be stopping the Louisville rushing attack. The Renegades rank fourth in the UFL, allowing 99 rushing yards per game, and the numbers are clear when it comes to the Kings.
When Louisville wins, they run the football effectively. In their four victories, the Kings have averaged 117 rushing yards per game. In losses, that number drops all the way to 36. Dallas has to force Chandler Rogers to beat them through the air.
Even during the losing streak, the Renegades defense has continued to create takeaways. Dallas ranks second in the UFL with eight interceptions and has forced 10 total turnovers this season.
Louisville Kings
The Kings enter Week Nine as arguably the hottest team in the UFL. Fresh off back-to-back victories over the DC Defenders, Louisville has completely revived its season.
The Kings currently sit tied for the final playoff spot, although they do not own the tiebreaker over Birmingham. Louisville likely needs to win out, and get help, to reach the postseason.
Now comes another massive test against a desperate Dallas team with no margin for error.
Louisville’s resurgence has been fueled by the leadership of Chandler Rogers and a revitalized rushing attack. James Robinson and Ian Wheeler have combined for seven rushing touchdowns, and the ground game has become the engine of the offense.
It is beyond critical for Louisville to establish the run again this week.
If the Kings stay ahead of schedule on the ground, Rogers will have opportunities to involve his playmakers downfield. Isaiah Winstead and Lucky Jackson remain dangerous threats at every level of the field, and Louisville will look to get them involved early and often. They both rank in the ten in receiving yards.
Protecting the football is also a major key for the Kings. Giving momentum to a struggling Dallas team is the quickest way to let the Renegades back into the game. Louisville’s formula is simple: establish the run, protect the football, and capitalize on chunk plays.
Defensively, the Kings have become one of the most opportunistic units in the UFL. Louisville leads the league with 15 takeaways, including 11 interceptions. Corey Mayfield Jr. leads the UFL with four interceptions and picked off Austin Reed twice back in Week Five.
The Kings front seven will once again look to make Reed uncomfortable and force him into mistakes. Cam Gill remains one of the most dangerous defenders in the league and leads the UFL with eight sacks after adding another in Week Eight. All eyes will be on the league’s sack leader once again.
X-Factor:
After dismantling Dallas in Week Five, the Kings are looking for another statement win. Meanwhile, the Renegades are simply trying to keep their season alive.
Ultimately, this matchup comes down to two defenses that thrive on taking the football away. Which team wins the turnover battle and gives its offense extra opportunities?
Will Austin Reed respond in the biggest moment of Dallas’ season? Or will the ghosts of Week Five follow him back into Louisville?
